Custom home office built-in shelving with cabinet base in Wayne PA by LM Legacy Remodeling
The difference between a built-in that looks like furniture pushed against a wall and one that looks original to the house comes down to decisions made before the first cut. These are the ones I walk through with every client.
Depth. Standard bookshelves run shallower than base cabinets — a built-in with a deeper cabinet base and shallower shelving above gives you real storage below and display above, with a countertop ledge where they meet. Getting these depths right for what you'll actually store is decision one.
The cabinet base. Doors below, open shelves above is the configuration that works in almost every room: the clutter disappears, the display stays. Decision two is doors versus drawers versus open cubbies down low.
How it meets the ceiling. A built-in that stops a foot short of the ceiling looks like a bookshelf. One that runs to the ceiling and ties in with crown molding looks like architecture. If the room already has crown, the built-in's crown should match or complement it — the same conversation we have on our crown molding projects.
Shelf thickness and span. Long shelves in thin material sag under real books. Thicker shelf stock, or shorter spans between verticals, keeps the lines straight for decades. It's a structural decision dressed up as a style one.
Lighting and wiring. Puck lights over display shelves, outlets inside cabinets for components, cable paths for the TV — all easy before the unit is built, all painful after.
A built-in is planned, measured, built, and installed against the specific quirks of your wall — the outlet that's in the way, the floor that's out of level, the window that isn't centered. When the same person handles the design conversation and the installation, those quirks get solved in the plan instead of discovered on install day. That's how every LM Legacy built-in runs.
